How secured loans work
A secured loan is backed by collateral, an asset the lender can claim if the loan isn't repaid. Because the lender's risk is lower, secured loans usually come with higher amounts, lower rates and easier approval than unsecured financing.
The trade-off is that the pledged asset is at risk, so it's important to borrow an amount your cash flow can comfortably repay.

Frequently asked questions
What happens to my collateral?
You keep using it. The lender places a lien on it and only claims it if the loan goes into default.
How much can I borrow against an asset?
It depends on the asset type and value. Lenders advance a percentage of the collateral's value, which varies by asset.
Is a personal guarantee still required?
Often, yes. Many business loans, secured or not, also ask for a personal guarantee from the owners.
